Camp Out w/ a Good Book Day!

We did many activities last Monday involving reading and our partnership school in Arizona. I am proud to say that my class alone read over 2,000 pages in 1 day. We set out to read the exact mileage to Salt River Elementary School in Arizona where our pen pals are located. One page in a book equaled one mile on the road. ;) We broke it up throughout the day and students even kept a travel log to keep track of all of their mileage to and from Arizona. We enjoyed some trail mix snack while recording our mileage along the way. We read with our flashlights for a little while and it was nice to be camping without the worry of weather conditions and bugs. LOL! :) In the afternoon, we did some activities with Math using measurement and a map of the United States to show a true map scale. For our S'mores activity we reviewed our past unit on Solids, Liquids and Gases. Students had to determine how the properties of the matter in the marshmellow and chocolate would change once heat was added. Of course, we did enjoy eating them too. :) It was a great day to celebrate reading!
