OOBLECK!!!

In case you are wondering why your child came home tonight with green "shrek like" hands, it is because of a Science lab we did in class! :) We read the book by Dr. Seuss. Bartholomew and the Oobleck, and then we made oobleck together. In the story, a sticky liquid falls from the sky as a result of the king becoming bored with normal weather. It was a really fun and neat lesson to demonstrate how a suspension can behave like a solid or a liquid depending on how much pressure you apply. The kids not only had fun but were allowed to see how matter can change states. :)

We met our 750 Box Tops Goal!!!

YAY!!! I am so proud of our boys and girls who continue to bring in those box tops to support our class and school. The students have now won a soda and popcorn party!! Please continue to support us in trying to be the first 3rd grade class to reach 100 Box Tops in order to win a class pizza party!

Polygons and concept of Perimeter

Children made polygons with straws and twist-ties, noting similarities and differences. They measured the sides and found the perimeter of the straw polygons.

Fabulous Fall Writings

I am very proud of all my students for their hard work on these writings. They each wrote about their 3 favorite things about fall. If you get a chance, please come and check them out. They are currently on display outside the classroom on our hallway. :)

How Big Is A Foot?

The kids began Unit 3 on Measurement this week. We did a read aloud with How Big Is A Foot? We then estimated the length of items and measured them in class shoe units. We discussed why all our measurements were not the same and then agreed on a "class shoe" length that everyone in the class can use. This allowed the lesson to flow right into the invention of "standard units" and why they are so important.

CAFE Reading Strategies Menu

We launched CAFE last week together and students were placed into strategy groups based on MAP scores and interests. These reading strategies will be taught whole group in the form of mini-lessons and then individualized instruction will be given during our small group instruction time. This will reinforce reading strategies that are fundamental to the reading process. I will be sending home a list of all the strategies we will cover this year. :) The students are very excited and anxious to start our reading groups!

JDRF Popsicle Party

WHOO HOO!! Our class was the first class in 3rd grade to reach the "500" Box Tops mark so we were rewarded with a popsicle party last week. I am so proud of my boys and girls. I hope we can continue being # 1 and reach our pizza party goal!! I know if we try really hard this goal can be accomplished too! :)
