Fun with shapes in Math

We practiced making equilateral triangles in class this week.

Students did an awesome job creating not only equilateral triangles but isosceles and scalene triangles.

Once we mastered triangles, we moved on to squares and rectangles.

Some of us got fancy and decided to create new shapes all on our own.

Soil Observations

Students were able to look at 4 different soil samples this past week.

We classified them based on texture of grains and by color.

We observed each sample and it's properties.
Then, we glued down our soil samples to take home.

Making Volcanos!

As a way to finally finish our study of Earth Changes I decided to do an experiment by having the students make volcanic eruptions in class.

We made predictions throughout the entire lab session, and the students recorded their observations of each volcano.

We measured the exact amounts of each ingredient.

Love the anticipation on their faces!

The first amount of vinegar wasn't quite enough just like we predicted!
But man on man the 1/2 cup of vinegar did the trick!
Like true scientists we observed the changes to the soil around our volcanos as well.
One final one to go! WOW! This one had the biggest eruption of them all! =)

I was so impressed with how well they listened and followed directions during this activity.  I am sure it is one they will always remember from 3rd grade!

Fall Carnival

It was so great to see so many families Friday night at our school's first ever Fall Carnival.  We had a great time as a family and I loved being able to see many of you there.  If you came and I didn't get a pic of you or your family, I am sorry.  We didn't get to stay as long as we wanted because my little girl was starting to fuss.  As the weekend went on, I found out why - she woke up in the middle of the night with croup and we have been trying to get her well all weekend.  I am thankful though we were able to stay long enough to play and have some fun.  I know how hard our PTO has worked to organize this carnival.
PLINKO!!!! I love this game. Go Emily!
Here's my son, Dawson trying it!
Here's my sweet Madalynn getting ready to throw darts at a balloon!
Tyler being sweet and standing in line with her. Precious!
Getting directions on what to do!
 YAY! She did it!
Tyler did a great job too!
 Great family moments with friends!
 Hunter with his sweet family!
MaKenzey and Mom helping out with the snow cones!
Michaela and MaKenzey giving us a smile!
MaKenzey with her brother Cuyler enjoying a snow cone. =)

Treats for joining PTO!

I want to give a HUGE shout out to all the students and their families who decided to join our school's PTO this year.  I always encourage families to support our PTO because they do so many wonderful things for our school. We had 19 out of 22 students join and were still able to reach our 100% goal because we had more than one family purchase multiple cards. WHOO HOO! As a reward for those who decided to join, we had a little popsicle celebration outside this past Friday.  =)

Playing "Name The Target Number" Math Game

We learned a new math game this week and the kids LOVE playing it.  I can tell it will be one of our faves this year and will get many requests to play. :)  You can also practice this game at home with your child if you have a deck of cards.  The goal is to use as many of the 5 cards to reach your target number.  It is rare for a child to be able to use all 5 cards at once but I was so excited to see quite a few of my kids being able to do this skill. =)
