Explorers Face Talk App

Students were allowed to choose their own Explorer to research.  Then, they worked collaboratively in groups to create a video using "Face Talk" app.   We found pictures each explorer and each person had an opportunity to participate in their own video. :)  They LOVED using this app and we hope to use it again with another unit of study.  The videos are below the pics. Enjoy! :)

Math Fun

Students made predictions about their 3D shapes and whether they would land on their side or land flat. After we tested those predictions but dropping each shape 50 times to see which one was more likely to land on it's side. :)

Edible Soil Treats

We enjoyed edible soil treats Friday as a fun way to end out unit of study on soil.  The bottom layer was Jello to represent how our Earth plates can shift and move.  The marshmallows represented bedrock.  The cheerios were the top soil and cocoa krispies the subsoil.  On top of that was our layer of organic matter or humus represented with mini m&m's.  To top it all, we used gummy worms for our earthworms.  It turned out to be a super yummy treat.  Super thanks to all our parents who donated items for us.  You are all the best!!! ;p

Rolling Reader

Our class signed up for a Rolling Reader which can be a parent of any child at our school and we were fortunate to have Brayden's mother chosen as our reader.  She started this past week and will visit our classroom each Tuesday to read to us.  :)

Volunteer Spot Sign-Up for Halloween Treats

Throughout the year, I will use Volunteer Spot to allow parents to sign up to bring in treats for items needed for classroom celebrations.  Click on the link below for our Halloween/Fall Treats Day.  Thanks! :)

Sign up for our Halloween Treats! :)

Soil Observations

We classified different soil samples together today.  We observed their properties like color, texture, and  grain sizes.  We also looked at our own samples brought from home and compared how that soil sample was alike and different from these soil samples.  Each student should've brought home their soil observations today in their book bags.  :)

Slow & Rapid Changes to Earth Paper Slide Projects

Students worked in groups and created paper slideshows recorded with iPads. They discussed whether their change was slow or rapid, how does the process occur, effects on the Earth and people, and listed one interesting fact.  I am hoping to get these loaded soon onto the blog for all to see. :)

Math Time Fun

Students practiced with Everyday math cards and the game Name that Target Number. This game can even be played with regular playing cards at home as a family. :)
Students would deal out 5 cards and then 1 card as the target number.  The goal is to use addition or subtraction skills and see how many of the cards they could use in order to reach that target number.  Whoever could use the most cards won them all. :)

Ghostbusters Donuts - PTO Reward from Mrs. P ;p

As promised I brought in Krispy Kreme donuts as a treat for PTO memberships.  As of this week we now have 100% for our class.  We are the first class in the ENTIRE school to have 100%.  This couldn't have been done without the help from you- our parents.  Thank you so much again! :)

Native American Pic Collages

As we are finishing up this unit of study on Native Americans, students used the iPads and made pic collages.  We split into groups and chose which one Native American group to create a collage using various pictures found.  Each group had to include their group's name, types of food, culture life/way of  life, and then had to decorate their collages with those pictures and backgrounds.

Mrs. P was super impressed. ;p

Weathering Experiment

In class this week we took some Skittles and used water in eye droppers to demonstrate the process of weathering.

We started with 10 drops of water and recorded our observations.
We then did 20 drops and observed how the pieces of shell coating were coming off the Skittles.

Our last task was to do 40 drops of water.

Of course once we disposed of the used Skittles, we did enjoy some of the untouched Skittle and "tasted the rainbow." :P
