"Thinking About Our Thinking"

I have learned that kids have to see it to believe it. :) We did many activities this week including creating a reading salad to represent metacognition to help students understand how to "think about their thinking". The students put the special ingredients (text + thinking = reading salad)into a salad bowl to be tossed all together. Students had some concrete experiences with schema (our background knowledge). We wrote down different life thoughts, feelings, experiences, relationships and passions onto slips of paper. Using a lint roller (which represented our brains) we sprinkled the papers onto a table, and rolled the sticky roller over them. Throughout our lives, we have picked up millions of experiences, thoughts, and feelings which have all been rolled together in our brains. The kids loved these activities and it helped to show them that the presence of schema helps to increase a reader's feeling of self-confidence, and allows students to be more willing to take risks :)
