This past week we began learning about Author's PIE. We didn't actually eat a PIE, but we did use this acronym to help us with learning about why an author is writing a particular piece of writing. As readers, we are always asking ourselves what is the purpose behind this text? What is the author trying to tell us in our texts? Is the author trying to inform or teach us something new or trying to persuade us to buy or do something? Or maybe just keep us reading by entertaining or making us laugh? This is how PIE (persuade, inform, entertain) was created to help us remember them all. There are also times though when the author's purpose is to describe or explain something to us. In these cases the author is using descriptive language to describe something or explain a how-to piece like giving directions to make something. As readers we need to understand all the differences so we can truly understand the purpose of a piece of writing.
In a way to apply this new knowledge we used old leftover Scholastic book orders and cut out various books. We then sorted them and glued them down into our interactive notebooks under the correct flap.
For example, if we found a book about sharks we glued it under the Inform section. Another one found was a Fancy Nancy book, which we glued under Entertain.
